Poor filing systems and procedures have plagued legal
services programs for years. Electronic documents have compounded the
problem. Far from the "paperless" office, legal services programs now
manage both paper and electronic filing systems. While CD-ROM technology
with a single disk capable of holding up to 50,000 pages, promises to
increase document accuracy and accessibility in the future legal
services programs still face the constant frustration of finding needed
papers or documents quickly.
Managing information and records of which filing is one component is
at the core of organizational effectiveness. By properly managing the
storage, flow, and retrieval of information, programs can greatly reduce
the potential for client neglect and case mismanagement.
