The REAL People’s Court is part
of Benchmark’s
Trial and Hearing Skills Training.
Every other year we offer this training to develop the trial skills of
lawyers who represent the poor, seniors, people with disabilities and
other very low-income people in civil cases. This week long training
which takes place at Presentation Center in Los Gatos ends with a jury
trial in the Superior Courthouse in San Jose.
As a witness, you'll play a role in
Martin v. Smith, a landlord tenant action where Martin seeks to evict
Smith alleging Smith (and three children) have trashed Martin's house.
Smith says that Martin rented her a dump and failed to keep her promise
to fix the place.
Ms./Mr. Martin and cousin testify for Martin.
Ms./Mr. Smith and baby sitter testify for Smith.
This is as good as it gets!
Witnesses are most important in making
the trial an effective learning experience--learning which results in
more quality legal services for poor people. As a bonus, you'll have a
chance to meet other people who share your commitment to justice and
have a great time doing it!
