Definitions and Terms

Bi-Sexual
– The capacity to be attracted
physically and/or emotionally to more than one gender.
|

Gay Man
– The preferred term for reference to a
male with a same-gender orientation.
|
|
Genderqueer
– Someone who identifies as a
gender other than "man" or "woman," or someone
who identifies as neither, both, or some combination
thereof. Some genderqueer people see their identity as one
of many different genders outside of man and woman, some see
it as a term encompassing all gender identities outside of
the gender binary (that there are only two genders), some
believe it encompasses binary genders among others, some may
identify as a-gender and some see it as a
third gender in addition to the traditional two.

GLBT
– Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender;
used interchangeably with LGBT.

|
GLBT Argot – Slang
terms used within some of the LGBT community.
|
|
Heterosexism
– The explicit or implicit
assumption that everyone is heterosexual.
|
|
Homophobia
– The fear, hatred or avoidance
of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender individuals.
Homophobia is prejudice or bigotry toward gay, lesbian,
bisexual or transgender individuals.

Homosexuality
– Primary sexual attraction to
members of the same gender.
|
Intersex
- General term used for a variety of conditions in which a
person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that
doesn’t seem to fit the typical definitions of female or
male. For example, a person might be born appearing to be
female on the outside, but having mostly male-typical
anatomy on the inside. Or a person may be born with genitals
that seem to be in-between the usual male and female
types—for example, a girl may be born with a noticeably
large clitoris, or lacking a vaginal opening, or a boy may
be born with a notably small penis, or with a scrotum that
is divided so that it has formed more like labia. Or a
person may be born with mosaic genetics, so that some of her
cells have XX chromosomes and some of them have

LGBT
-
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender; used interchangeably
with GLBT.

|
Lesbian
– The preferred term for reference to a female with a
same-gender orientation.
|
|
Queer – Term used by many
LGBT people to identify themselves; a term that is more
open, fluid, and all-encompassing than the more perceived
rigid labels of bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender. Not
all LGBT people feel comfortable or agree with using "queer"
to describe themselves since historically it was – and
sometimes still is - used as a term of degradation.

Sexual
Orientation – Sexual Orientation
refers to whether someone is generally physically and/or
emotionally attracted to someone of their own gender,
someone of the opposite gender, or people of both genders.
|

Transgender
- Transgender is an
"umbrella"
term encompassing various groups of people with one thing in
common: their identity, characteristics, and/or expressions
do not conform to society’s stereotypes about gender. Among
these groups are the following: transsexuals (male-to-female
(MTF) and female-to-male (MTF), transvestites or
cross-dressers, drag queens or drag kings, bi-gender people
and inter-sex people. |
